Description
Buy the transcription of Oleo as played by Phineas Newborn Jr. for solo piano. The transcription is from the 1961 album A World of Piano!
Oleo is a well-known composition by Sonny Rollins. Newborn recorded his version with bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones. The song starts with a drum intro in a very fast tempo when Phineas is playing unisono lines for two hands. One of his trademark techniques that he will use throughout the song. After the striking intro the theme begins with only piano and bass. The drums only plays in the B part. This also happens in the first chorus of the improvisation. From the second chorus, the complete band plays until the last theme. During the improvisation of Newborn many bebop lines and blues licks can be heard.
